Stock Market :: essays research papers

Stock Market Crash of 1929   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The day the stock market crashed, October 29th, 1929, is now known in infamy as Black Tuesday. â€Å"The Reasons Stocks Crashed in 1929† by Harold Bierman Jr. says that there were many events that led up to the Stock Market Crash. On October 24th, 1929, the stock market fell 9% during the day, which was a huge deal back in that time when a lot of people had money invested in the Stock Market. After this decline there was a selling alarm, as everyone wanted to get his or her money out of the stock market. Bierman concludes that the stock prices were too high in October of ’29 and that a crash in the market was bound to happen. â€Å"The Reasons Stocks Crashed in 1929† by Harold Bierman Jr. reviews a small set of possible causes for the crash and reaches specific conclusions about the events that led to the biggest stock market crash in history.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The 29th of October will always be known as Black Tuesday but it was not the only day the stock market struggled. The New York Times of October 4th headed a page one article â€Å"Year’s Worst Break Hits Stock Market†, but almost all reported business news was still very optimistic. On October 23rd the market declined by four billion dollars and if the events of the 29th did not happen then the 23rd would have gone done in history as the major stock market event. The events of the 23rd were dwarfed by the proceedings of the morning of the 29th when it was said that within a few hours of the stock market being open that day, the prices had fallen so low that they wiped out all of the gains that have been made in the entire previous year.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Since the stock market was viewed as an indicator of the American economy, the public’s confidence in the economy was shattered.

Long or Short Vacation

Name: Phan Thi Thanh Giang Email: [email  protected] com ESSAY 1 Topic: Some people believe that students should be given one long vacation each year. Others believe that students should have several short vacations throughout the year. Which viewpoint do you agree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your choice. No one can deny that a vacation has many benefits for students. In Viet Nam, it has long been a controversy whether give a vacation should be long or short. Most of students think that is great if they have several short vacations each year while others disagree. Both opinions have their own advantages and disadvantages. From my point of view, it is better to have several shorts vacations throughout the years. The reasons are as follows. In my personal experience, almost people like vacations especially students. Short vacations can help students decrease pressures or depressions from their overloaded study, hard examinations and parents’ desires had better than a long vacation. Speaking of study pressures, students always live in a tense state in which they have to cope with a plenty of continuous problems; a series of required knowledge they must study and a chain of examination they must take are ruining children’s pure mind day by day.To deal with this, one short vacation will be capable of giving a hand to the children who are in need of help to decreases these stresses. The students will have enough time to adapt to occurrence and balance their daily life, their academic study after sorrows. If there’s only one long vacation per year, the students will only have one chance to face one stress while continuous matters happen steadily during the terms. In addition, students can regain energy easier and better by several shorts vacations. Shorter vacations are more rejuvenating.During the year, I am able to take several short trips to smaller towns, beaches, mountains in the surrounding area of where I live and I feel so much more refreshed when returning to study after one of these short vacations. Similarly, with short vacations I am able to sometimes go by myself or take friends, so there is always a sense of variety with each trip. By contrast, one long vacation can be tiring and at times quite boring. Indeed, after a long vacation, it is so difficult to restart my studying with highest efforts. In almost cases, it takes long time to adapt to study environment. Finally, short vacations make both students and their parents arrange plans for entertain or travel easier than one long vacation. The parents can send their children to short-term holiday camps or just have them travel. Likewise, the students in university can take short tours to domestic vacation spots. Such travels cost less money and are more available than long tours. Take my relationship for an example. Last summer holiday, my uncle sent my cousins to my grandmother because he did not have time to care of them in approximated 2 mo nths. On the other hand, for one-month vacation, my aunt sent her son to â€Å"Army-term summer trip†.He said to me that the trip is the wonderful experience. The issue whether students should be given one long vacation each year or they should have several vacations throughout the year is the one that is open for debate. Although a long vacation has also some advantages, I think short vacation is better in many ways. Students have more chances to decrease pressures or depressions from their overloaded study, hard examinations and parents’ desires. They can also regain energy easier and better. In addition, short vacations make both students and their parents arrange plans for entertain or travel easier.

Why Joe Biden Quit His 1988 Campaign

Long before Joe Biden was tapped to be Barack Obamas vice president, and long before he began testing the waters for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, the lawmaker from Delaware got caught up in a plagiarism scandal that derailed his first campaign for the White House in 1987. Later in his political career, Biden described his 1987 campaign as an embarrassing train wreck and put the plagiarism case behind him, but his use of others work without attribution became an issue in the 2016 presidential election. Joe Biden Acknowledges Plagiarism in Law School Biden first publicly acknowledged plagiarizing another authors work during his bid for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. Biden used five pages from a published law review article without quotation or attribution in a paper he claimed to have written as a first-year student at the  Syracuse University College of Law, according to a faculty report on the incident issued at the time. The article Biden plagiarized, Tortious Acts as a Basis for Jurisdiction in Products Liability Cases,  was initially published in the  Fordham Law Review in May 1965. Among the sentences Biden used without appropriate attribution, according to a New York Times report, was: The trend of judicial opinion in various jurisdictions has been that the breach of an implied warranty of fitness is actionable without privity, because it is a tortious wrong upon which suit may be brought by a non-contracting party. Biden apologized to his law school when he was a student and said his actions were unintentional. On the campaign trail 22 years later, he told the press before abandoning his campaign:  I was wrong, but I was not malevolent in any way. I did not intentionally move to mislead anybody. And I didnt. To this day I didnt. Joe Biden Accused of Plagiarizing Campaign Speeches Biden was also said to have used without attribution substantial portions of speeches by  Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, as well as  British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock, in his own stump speeches in 1987. Biden said those claims were much ado about nothing but eventually  quit his campaign for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination on  Sept. 23, 1987, amid scrutiny of his record. Among  the  similarities with Kinnock that came under scrutiny, according to The Telegraph newspaper, was this Biden turn of phrase: Why is it that Joe Biden is the first in his family ever to go a university? Why is it that my wife ... is the first in her family to ever go to college? Is it because our fathers and mothers were not bright? ... Is it because they didnt work hard? My ancestors who worked in the coal mines of northeast Pennsylvania and would come after 12 hours and play football for four hours? Its because they didnt have a platform on which to stand. The Kinnock speech reads: Why am I the first Kinnock in a thousand generations to be able to get to university? Was it because our predecessors were thick? Does anybody really think that they didnt get what we had because they didnt have the talent or the strength or the endurance or the commitment? Of course not. It was because there was no platform upon which they could stand. Plagiarism Cases an Issue in 2016 Campaign The plagiarism cases were long forgotten until Biden, who was vice president at the time, began testing the waters for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2015. Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump  asked how hed fare against Biden in a general election in August 2015, brought up Bidens plagiarism. Trump said: I think Id matchup great. Im a job producer. Ive had a great record, I havent been involved in plagiarism. I think I would match up very well against him. Neither Biden nor his campaign commented on Trumps statement.
